SUMMARY:St Columbanus: The Strangford Connection
DESCRIPTION:Canon Andrew Totten OBE (honorary research fellow\, Durham University) will deliver a lecture entitled St Columbanus: The Strangford Connection. After researching the pilgrimage on which Columbanus embarked from Ulster to continental Europe in 590AD\, he will present conclusions which challenge the status quo and which put Strangford on the map.St Columbanus was a hugely influential Irish saint\, whose medieval journeys have inspired the making of a modern pilgrimage trail from Leinster to Ulster and from France to Italy. His voyage from Ulster to France in 590AD saw books carried from the ‘island of saints and scholars’ to continental Europe for the first time. \n\n\n\nBut from where exactly did Columbanus set sail? Columbanus is firmly associated with Bangor\, given his years spent as a monk at its abbey. However\, dusting off the original Latin manuscripts and surveying evidence from archaeology and geography\, Andrew Totten makes the case that the shores of Strangford Lough provide the missing link in the saint’s story.Parking is available in nearby car parks or on street parking\, which are free after 6.30 pm.The venue is fully accessible for those with disabilities \n\n\n\nLive Map\n\n\n Google Map Plugin \n\n\n\n\n\nBook online at www.visitardsandnorthdown.com or in person atBangor or Ards Visitor Information Centres or call 028 9127 0069

SUMMARY:Columban Way Newcastle Walk
DESCRIPTION:A guided 5 mile walk from Newcastle following the coastline to Murlough Bay and on to Dundrum. This will be followed by an optional visit to Dundrum Castle. \n\n\n\nThe starting point at the promenade end\n\n\n\nHalf the route is along the beach\, this is followed by dune boardwalks and a traffic free road section \n\n\n\nMeet at 2pm by the sculpture above\, equipped with good shoes and a waterproof coat and (sun block)! \n\n\n\nRemember to look behind you for the best view of Slieve Donard and the Mournes!\n\n\n\nPlease note that at high tide (and a couple of hours either side) the first section of the walk is either impassible or very challenging and and should not be attempted. So if you later decide to do the walk by yourself – check the tides and ensure you are walking away from Newcastle on a falling tide at least 2.5 hours after high tide! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWe strongly recommend that you park in Dundrum and catch the 13:11 Translink bus 237 to Newcastle Bus Station (which is two minutes walk from the starting point). While there is a car park at the starting point on a June Saturday afternoon it is likely to be full. There are three free car parks at the north end of Dundrum and it is 600m walk to the main bus stop (the 237 bus does not visit the other stop you pass on the way). \n\n\n\nIf you want to leave time to eat in Newcastle you can catch the 12:39 Translink bus 520 which will get you to the bus station at 12:55. \n\n\n\nThe Main Street bus stop has a shelter and is opposite a “Nearby” supermarket\n\n\n\nWalk map with directions in PDF Format\n\n\n\nPrint out the document below to get a paper map on the route. \n\n\n\n\nNewcastle to Dundrum Walk\n\n\n\n\nWeather\n\n\n\nIn the case of extreme weather the walk will be postponed and we we email everyone who has registered.
