DESCRIPTION:Dr Cornel Dora\, director of the Abbey Library\, St Gallen\, Switzerland\, will give a lecture on the incredible collection of manuscripts and writings\, many of which are attributed to Bangor and Nendrum Monastic Site on Mahee Island\, that are kept in the magnificent Abbey Library. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nSt Gallen Library\n\n\n\nFrom 1993 to 2001 Dr Cornel Dora worked as a librarian in the Abbey Library of St. Gallen. From 2001 to 2013 he was director of the Kantonsbibliothek Vadiana\, the state library of St. Gallen. Since 2013 he has been the director of the Abbey Library of St. Gallen.  His scholarly interests include cultural and ecclesiastical history as well as the history of books and libraries. \n\n\n\nSt Gall Priscian\n\n\n\nAmong the collections holding Irish manuscripts\, the Abbey Library of St Gall stands out. DESCRIPTION:An illuminating talk by Ronnie McClements from Bangor Historical Society about the beautiful stained-glass windows \n\n\n\nThe pelican window\n\n\n\nSt Columbanus Church\, Ballyholme\, is architecturally rich\, being built from a unique stone taken from Roxborough Castle in Moy\, Co Tyrone. There is a wonderful collection of stained glass windows representing Irish Saints: Columbanus\, Columba\, Finnian\, Comgall\, Gall\, Patrick\, Brigid and Brendan. SUMMARY:The making of Ireland's manuscripts\, medieval and modern
DESCRIPTION:Part of the Columbanus Festival 2025 \n\n\n\nSPACE Theatre\, Castle Road\, Bangor \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPádraig Ó Macháin\, Professor of Modern Irish at University College Cork\, will  examine the relics of a wonderful tradition of writing and craftsmanship by Irish monks ranging from Bangor to Cork from the 6th to the 19th century.  Previously\, as Professor at the Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies\, he founded the manuscript digitisation project\, Irish Script on Screen. \n\n\n\nIreland boosts a rich tradition of hand-made books that survive from the 6th to the 19th century.  In these books can be traced many aspects of the history of the island as well as the continuity of language\, literature and script over many centuries.  Today\, the manuscripts are kept in libraries in Ireland and throughout the world and form part of a heritage which\, through the digital age\, is only beginning to be fully appreciated. \n\n\n\nProfessor Ó Macháin was recently involved in a research project which was featured in the “Words on the Wave” exhibition at the National Museum Dublin. It included DNA analysis of early medieval vellum manuscripts to determine the origin of cattle that provided the skins for the parchment\, revealing the geographical source of the vellum used in Irish manuscripts housed in the St Gallen Library\, Switzerland.  This non-invasive research\, led by Trinity College Dublin\, used DNA from samples collected via a gentle eraser method to identify the genomes of the cattle\, confirming the origin of the materials used for these significant historical texts.   \n\n\n\nParking is available at SPACE theatre. \n\n\n\nOnline booking fees apply. DESCRIPTION:Part of the Columbanus Festival 2025 \n\n\n\nBallyholme Parish Centre\, Groomsport Road\, Bangor \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRenowned calligrapher\, Jacquie Brachi\, will teach basic skills with pen and ink as practised by Bangor monks in the 6th century. \n\n\n\nCalligraphy is the art of beautiful and expressive handwriting\, using a pen\, brush\, or other instrument to create harmonious lettering. It differs from regular handwriting\, as it involves practicing fundamental strokes—such as upstrokes\, downstrokes\, and ovals—to form letters rather than just personal cursive. Originating from the Greek words for “beauty” (kallos) and “to write” (graphein)\, calligraphy is a major art form in various cultures\, particularly in East Asia and the Middle East\, and is a distinct skill from the quick\, natural act of writing.   \n\n\n\nThis workshop is suitable for children between the ages of 11 and 16 years.  Participants will learn the basic skills of calligraphy and produce an age-appropriate piece of work that they can take home.  All materials supplied. \n\n\n\nParking is available in the Ballyholme Parish Centre car park  Alternatively\, there is limited parking in front of the church on the Groomsport Road. \n\n\n\nTicket sales will close at 12 noon on Friday 21 November. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLocation and Parking\n\n\n\nBallyholme Parish Centre\, Groomsport Road\, Bangor \n\n\n        Google Map Plugin

DESCRIPTION:Part of the Columbanus Festival 2025 \n\n\n\nBangor Abbey\, Abbey Street\, Bangor \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAward winning singers and songwriters Rachel McCarthy and David Lennon\, along with the Bangor Ghost Collective\, present a uniquely curated evening of ancient words\, songs\, and music celebrating place. \n\n\n\nIn the mid-6th century\, Comgall established a monastery in Bangor where his prodigy\, Columbanus\, served as a priest and master of the school. Through the work of the monks who lived there\, Bangor became a very important and influential place for religion\, learning\, writing\, and art. SUMMARY:Columban Way Walk
DESCRIPTION:Part of the Columbanus Festival 2025 \n\n\n\nMeet at Bangor Bell Sculpture\, beside Bangor Abbey Parish car park\, Bangor\, BT20 4JF \n\n\n\nA selection of the smaller sculptures by Holger Lonze which mark out the Bell Walk\n\n\n\nThis popular half mile walk follows the Bangor Bell Trail from the Bangor Bell to the North Down Museum.  Local tour guides Brigid Watson and Barbara Boyle will tell the story of Columbanus’ journey from Bangor to Bobbio. \n\n\n\nAround 590\, Columbanus left Bangor with 12 disciples\, including Gall\, and sailed to Europe on a pilgrimage for Christ.  These men would go on to establish some of Europe’s most influential Christian centres in present day France\, Austria and Italy.  The walk will trace the footsteps of Columbanus from the time he left Bangor to Luxeuil-lesBains in France\, St Gallen in Switzerland\, Bregenz in Austria\, and Bobbio in Italy.
