DESCRIPTION:An illuminating talk by Ronnie McClements from Bangor Historical Society about the beautiful stained-glass windows \n\n\n\nThe pelican window\n\n\n\nSt Columbanus Church\, Ballyholme\, is architecturally rich\, being built from a unique stone taken from Roxborough Castle in Moy\, Co Tyrone. There is a wonderful collection of stained glass windows representing Irish Saints: Columbanus\, Columba\, Finnian\, Comgall\, Gall\, Patrick\, Brigid and Brendan. SUMMARY:Gall Lecture: An Irish Treasure Chest on the Continent 
DESCRIPTION:Dr Cornel Dora\, director of the Abbey Library\, St Gallen\, Switzerland\, will give a lecture on the incredible collection of manuscripts and writings\, many of which are attributed to Bangor and Nendrum Monastic Site on Mahee Island\, that are kept in the magnificent Abbey Library. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nSt Gallen Library\n\n\n\nFrom 1993 to 2001 Dr Cornel Dora worked as a librarian in the Abbey Library of St. Gallen. From 2001 to 2013 he was director of the Kantonsbibliothek Vadiana\, the state library of St. Gallen. Since 2013 he has been the director of the Abbey Library of St. Gallen.  His scholarly interests include cultural and ecclesiastical history as well as the history of books and libraries. \n\n\n\nSt Gall Priscian\n\n\n\nAmong the collections holding Irish manuscripts\, the Abbey Library of St Gall stands out. SUMMARY:Ireland and the Birth of Europe exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Bangor Carnegie Library \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFor opening times please see the Library Website  \n\n\n\nAfter the collapse of the Roman Empire in the West\, Europeans built on its foundations to develop their own culture and identity. The Irish played an important role in this great enterprise. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nColumbanus and his followers\, including Gall\, were the first of the Irish missionaries and scholars to make their home on the continent around 600 AD. They contributed to the shaping of a European heritage that still endures today. Columbanus became the first man to write  ‘of all of Europe’ (totius Europae). \n\n\n\nResearched\, written and curated by Dr Damian Bracken\, University College Cork\, and Dr Angela Byrne for the Irish Department of Foreign Affairs\, this richly illustrated exhibition tells the story of the part played by Irish monks in the early development of Europe. \n\n\n\nIreland and the Birth of Europe was launched by Tánaiste Micheál Martin TD at University College Cork in April of 2023. Since then\, the exhibition has toured throughout the Republic of Ireland and Bangor Carnegie Library will be the first venue in Northern Ireland to host the exhibit. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nIt is anticipated that the exhibition will eventually travel to Budapest\, Hungary; Germany (country-wide); Zagreb\, Croatia; Sofia\, Bulgaria; Tokyo\, Japan; and Chicago\, USA. \n\n\n\nTalk by the Exhibition curator for Friends of Columbanus members\n\n\n\nDr Damian Bracken\, University College Cork\, a curator of the exhibition\, will give a talk on the exhibition theme on the afternoon of 22nd February 2024. DESCRIPTION:Acclaimed artist Jessica Hollywood will lead a print workshop to teach participants how to decorate and print their own Bangor Bell postcard using vintage letterpress techniques.  Materials supplied. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCelebrate the Columbanus Festival at Seacourt Print Workshop and take part in a unique activity designed specifically to honour the Bangor Bell. During the workshop you will be able to letterpress print your own postcard using our vintage presses and letterpress type. Participants will get to print up to 4 postcards and decorate them with water colour paints and pens. These will be unique\, limited edition prints which you will be able to keep or post to a friend. \n\n\n\nSeacourt Print Workshop is based in the former Ulster Bank building on main street\, Bangor.  The building is within a short walk from Bangor train and bus station. SUMMARY:The Columbanus Lecture
DESCRIPTION:Cormac Bourke\, a renowned expert on monastic bells\, will deliver a lecture entitled ‘Early Irish Hand-Bells Revisited.’  He will summarise what we know about the dozens of hand-bells of iron and bronze that survive from early medieval (ie pre-Norman) Ireland. \n\n\n\n\nHand-bells were used from the 5th century in monastic communities and churches and are the oldest continuously transmitted objects that we possess. The products of great technical skill\, their distribution is uneven and all the more interesting for that reason. Continuities with Scotland (and to a lesser extent Wales) are striking. This lecture will touch on these topics\, as well as on bell making in early Bangor and on modern reinterpretations of ancients bells. \n\n\n\nStatue of an Abbot\, White Island\, Lower Lough Erne (image @ Historic Environment Division DfC)\n\n\n\nCormac Bourke is from Dublin and lives in Belfast. He is Honorary Editor of the Ulster Journal of Archaeology and a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries.  He specialises in the study of early medieval metalwork and has published widely on the subject. SUMMARY:Bell Ringing
DESCRIPTION:Colin Holliday\, Tower Captain of the St Comgall’s Church of Ireland Bell Ringers’\, will give a short introductory talk about bell ringing which will be followed by the church bell ringers’ practice session.   \n\n\n\n\nSt Comgall’s Church of Ireland Bell Tower with the light showing from the elevated Ringing Chamber during practice\n\n\n\nDoors open at 7.00pm.
