Columbanus Volunteers at Whitespots

On Saturday 4th May students from QUB Knights of Columbanus were joined by members of Friends of Columbanus Bangor and rangers from Ards and North Down Council in their mission to clean up the start of the Columbanus Way at Whitespots Country Park.

The weather was wet but the group were well prepared!

The main task was to remove plastic tree guards and their associated steel metal rods which had once protected the newly planted woodland at Whitespots Country Park.

Making a difference

The unsightly plastic covers and potentially hazardous metal rods were removed and collected in large builders sacks. These soon filled up and more bags had to be sent for to accommodate the spoils!

Ten big bags full!

The day’s work complete, the group retired to the Old Court House on the Bangor seafront for a traditional music session hosted by David Lennon, the vice Chair of Friends of Columbanus Bangor.

Many thanks to Jamie Nugent from QUB Knights of Columbanus for organising this event and Ards and North Down staff for facilitation and guidance. We hope that this will be just the start of an ongoing relationship to work together to enhance the local environment and celebrate our joint heritage.
