A guided 5 mile walk from Newcastle following the coastline to Murlough Bay and on to Dundrum. This will be followed by an optional visit to Dundrum Castle.

The best view of Slieve Donard is from the beach between Newcastle and Dundrum (not from anywhere above Newcastle). This superb, but much neglected, 5 mile walk can be done by anyone with moderate fitness and decent shoes (a waterproof coat is also strongly advised). At mid to low tide (which is when we will be walking) you will have firm sand underfoot. There is also a beautiful section on easy boardwalks through the sand dunes of Murlough Nature Reserve (NT) and a final section on almost traffic-free tarmac road and footpaths.

Please note that at high tide (and a couple of hours either side) the first section of the walk is either impassible or very challenging and and should not be attempted. So if you decide to do the walk by yourself – check the tides and ensure you are walking away from Newcastle on a falling tide at least 2.5 hours after high tide!

Historically roads would have been poor, or non-existent – so travel by sea and along beaches and mudflats would have been common. Indeed this route may well have been walked by Columbanus and it forms one of the most beautiful sections of the Irish Columban Way!
